Effect of intravenous cardiac glycosides on the aqueous humour dynamics of the cat.

چکیده
PREVious investigation by Simon, Bonting, and Hawkins (1962) indicated that intravenous cardiac glycosides caused a significant fall in the rate of aqueous humour formation in the cat eye. Langham (1963), using rabbits and cats, and Becker (1963), using rabbits, were not able to demonstrate this effect. Becker, using an intravitreal injection of cardiac glycosides, was able to demonstrate a fall in intraocular pressure. The use of cardiac glycosides in the clinical treatment of glaucoma has been reported by Simon and others (1962), who were able to demonstrate a measurable fall in the intra-ocular pressure. Smith and Mickatavage (1963) showed that topical cardiac glycosides caused a measurable, though slight, fall in intraocular pressure. This report concerns experimental work on cats. The method used by Simon and others (1962) has been substantially repeated.

.he ability of the cardiac glycosides, ouabain and digoxin, to lower eye pressure-' '' '-• has been ascribed to a primary inhibition of aqueous humor inflow. In the cat, which is the experimental animal of this study, the effect of ouabain on aqueous humor inflow is not clear. The previous report, which indicated that aqueous humor formation of the cat was decreased by ouabain, was based upon r...
متن کاملEffect of light and passage on cardiac glycoside production on cultured cell of Digitalis nervosa Steud & Hochst
Light is important for the production of metabolites by plant cell culture. It is therefore necessary to evaluate the light conditions with respect to exposure time. Both enhancement and inhibition have been observed depending on exposure time and species. Callus culture of D. nervosa was established and effect of light and passage on cardiac glycoside production was studied. In vitro cultures ...

KNOWLEDGE of the means by which substances enter and leave the eye, usually referred to as " aqueous-humour dynamics ", is essential for an understanding of the factors contributing to the control of the intra-ocular pressure. In non-living systems, when a membrane separates two concentrations of a substance in a solution to which the membrane is permeable, this substance travels across the mem...
